Silman has an unique approach to teach about chess strategy: look
for imbalances and exploit them! This concept unifies all types of strategical
featrures like developement, material distribution, strong and weak squares,
good and bad bishops, open and closed lines, ... Silman's book is among
the very top rated in different reviews (e.g. an extensive one by James Smith)! And it is one of the best selling
chess books worldwide - for a good reason!
This is surely one of the ten most influental chess-books of the
20th century! I have a german edition from Rattmann and I enjoy it! Nimzowitsch
has an unique style of telling stories about pieces that is very entertaining.
You can get a taste of how wittingly great master Nimzo has teached in
his legendary danish chess-courses about 70 years ago.
More than 60 years after the first edition this is still the best book ever written on this subject . Period. I personally have a fine older german edition titled Der Rochadeangriff ("Attack against the castled king").
This is another all-time-classic. Most probably this is the best book to start about learning openings. I must admit that I wasted a lot of time with useless variations books before. It was really nice to discover this little old-fashioned paperback and to learn about the difference between strong point and counter attack opening strategies. This little booklet by far doesn't cover the full scope of modern opening knowledge, but I recomend it strongly as a first try to understand the main ideas in a number of modern openings. - My personal ISBN 0-8129-1756-1 McKay / Times books paperback is an algebraic edition.
"In
a year of great books, this is my pick for book of the year." -
(Jeremy
Silman) Tisdall's book is adressed to club and tournament players
who want to enter new levels. His method is proven: Tisdall himself used
it for gaining GM level.
The best biography of Tal: written by the chess-wizard himself. He writes in a very humorous way about the ups and downs of his fascinating career, using partly fictual interviews with himself. This is one of the most outstanding chess books of the century! See the reviews at Amazon and learn that some people like it more than Cadogan's paperback binding quality allows...
This is an absolutely unique book about all aspects of chess, compressed
into a thick, compact paperback volume. Part One: Mastering Chess
deals with Delivering Mate, Tactics, Combinations, Endgames, Chess Openings
and concludes with tests concerning Attack and Defence. In Part
Two: The World of Chess issues like Beginning Chess, The Chess
Clock, Competitive Chess, Computer Chess, Online Chess, Women's, Veteran's,
Junior and Correspondence Chess, Endgame Studies and Chess in the
Media are covered. In Part Three: Essential Chess Information
Burgess given a Glossary of Chess Terms, A Brief History of the World
Chess Championship, and several appenices about How to Play Chess,
Chess Notation, Basic Mates, Chess Demographics and Suggestions
for further Reading.
Be sure: This is is by far no boring compilation: the style of presentation
is highly original and witty. It definitively deserves the title "Book
of the Year" awarded by the British Chess Federation.
This book sets a new level for general purpose game collections:
There are just two possibilities: you will either like David Bronstein
or you don't know him. This book is the best way to learn something about
"Devik" Bronstein, as his closest friends called him. The "Sorcere's apprentice"
appeared as a tribute to Bronstein's 70th birthday. The belgian chess author
Tom Fürstenberg was responsible for the design and textual finish,
the selection of games, the annotations and other material were provided
by Bronstein himself.
One of the most fascinating pages of chess literature I read anywhere
is the chapter "Devik" in that book; authored by Tatjana Boleslavskaya;
daughter of GM Isaak Boleslavsky; and later Bronstein's wife. The following
chapters were: 40 recommendations for the Novice; 50 Games with
comments; 60 Games with Diagrams; 70 Picturesque Games.
As an additional goodie three fascinating articles appearing at Bronstein's
50th, 60th and 70th birthday were reprinted. The tremendous value of this
book is completed with photos, a list of opponents, a record of openings
and tournament and match results.
This book is another classic. Kmoch deals with all kinds of pawn
formations in anprecedented thoroughness. Definitely the best book about
pawn structures I know.
This is my "vademecum" when I have to wait at the dentist or somewhere
else. Alburt has compiled in a really pocket-sized paperback four positions
on one page and explanations on the opposite page. Most of the stuff is
about tactics, some positions deal with endgames and strategic issues.
The Candidate's Tournament in Zuerich-Neuhausen 1953 was one of
the highest regarded chess-events of the 20th century - and Bronstein's
tournament book is definitely one of the very best of all times.
